Mindfulness is simply conscious awareness of what is happening in the present moment- the only moment we are alive…

We may have heard the term ‘living in the moment’ and agree that it seems to be a good idea. However, how many of us find ourselves doing one thing whilst thinking about what needs to be done next so that life often seems like a never-ending treadmill? Or we can find ourselves lost in thoughts of the past, living with regret, frustration, pain and anger so that the present moment is steeped in feelings and emotions from the past and doesn’t always feel a comfortable place to be.

Mindfulness is a wonderful way of becoming aware of how our minds are working so that we can recognise when we are ‘lost in thought’ or ‘carried away’ by emotion. We can start where we are – no matter how busy and frantic that seems to us- and learn to befriend the mind. From there, we learn how to gently train the mind so that it becomes more malleable for us to work with.

MEDITATION

Meditation is a path that teaches us to stay present. Journeying inward and opening to the presence that we already are, takes us into simple stillness, silence and spaciousness. It is here that ultimate happiness lies. It is like coming home- a safe and beautiful space that is undisturbed by external events. 

When we approach meditation from the viewpoint that we are reconnecting with our own perfect nature, then there will be less struggle and more ease. Otherwise, we will be trying to control the mind, supressing thoughts and tensing up, getting so frustrated with ourselves that we give up! 

This is where accessing guided meditation is really helpful and supportive. While one-to-one can, no doubt, be beneficial to begin with, there is nothing quite like the energy and sharing of a group. The coming together with others, either in person or online, creates a supportive network that is tangible even in zoom meetings.
